ConcreVerse - THE CONCRETE UNIVERSE
ConcreVerse – The Concrete Universe
It is all about the wonderful material called CONCRETE.
The blog is aimed at helping to all those engineers and non-engineers who wish to know about concrete without reading books on CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY. I as the author of this blog, do not claim extraordinary expertise in concrete technology but will try to simply settle the questions and curiosities about concrete. I am open to learn from constructive feedback of the readers.
How old concrete is?
After completing graduation in civil engineering, I joined a construction project located about an hour and half from my town. On one of the weekends, I traveled back to my town directly from the project site completing concreting schedule. When I reached home, my grandmother stared at me and started crying, “honestly tell me you are not doing labour work!” I realized there were grey stains of concrete on my clothes which I got while supervising the concreting work. The concrete stains on my clothes had disturbed my grandmother.
Fresh concrete is dirty grey material people would not like to get closer. However, we find concrete everywhere around us where we live. It is the second largest consumed material after water!
ACI 116 (A glossary of terms in field of cement & concrete technology) defines –
“Concrete is a composite material that consists essentially of a binding medium within which are embedded particles of fragments if aggregates.
In hydraulic cement concrete, the binder is formed from a mixture of hydraulic cement and water.”
It means after the invention of Portland Cement in 1824 by Joseph Aspidin, people started using the cement as binding medium for making concrete. However, our ancestors were using concrete as construction material with other binding mediums such as lime, mud etc. There are known evidences of concrete floors built @ 7,800 BCE at Yiftahel, Southern Galilee, Israel
No wonder the concrete is close to 10,000 years old.
Why concrete is consumed so widely?
Though concrete is in use for thousands of years but it is extensively used in the modern times particularly after the invent of Portland cement. Almost all the built infrastructure around us has one or another form of concrete. Most of us look at the cracked, leaking and deteriorated concrete structures and failed to understand why concrete is so widely used despite having such issues.
Think of world’s largest gravity dam Three Gorges, China holding huge water reservoir which is visible from moon, Suez or Panama canals connecting oceans it is concrete which resist water force to make such structures possible to work. Concrete has enormous capacity to hold and resist water. This quality makes concrete a material of choice for water bearing structures.
Concrete is almost 2.5 times heavier than water and not easy to lift and shift. However, its mouldability in desired shapes and sizes helps in building large structures sprawling vertically and horizontally. The engineers have created sculptures, crafted ornamental marvels as well tiny perfume bottles of concrete. This quality of concrete helps engineers to build most challenging structures.
On top of this water resisting capability and mouldability, concrete is one of the most economical construction materials. We will also discuss several other engineering properties of concrete makes it widely use and wonderful.
